The case of a DVD should list the resolution of the movie contained within. Anything with a width lower than 720 pixels is considered standard definition. 720p or above is considered high definition.

If you flip through the channels one of them should be the HD channel. If it's not there, then your TV doesn't have HD. An HD channel can be found somewhere before the channel 2.

You can tell whether or not your TV is HD by simply looking at the back and searching for a HDMI input or output, or look at the box you bought it in. It should say"HD ready."
