A toad fits into the categories that make it an amphibian, like newts and frogs.

The most important point is that toads start off living in water and breathing with gills, like fish, but when they are adults they can live out of water and they breathe with lungs. With a few exceptions in fish, amphibians are the only animals to live in these two stages.

They also have these features that all amphibians share:

> They lay eggs in water.

> They have moist, slippery skin.

> They are cold-blooded.

I hope this helped!

They have an aquatic 'larval' stage and need to be near water at all times. They often breathe through lungs but always through their skin as well, so it needs to keep wet to allow oxygen to pass through (is easier with a wet membrane). They are all carnivorous (insects, sometimes small mammals). They lay eggs without a shell, resembling fish eggs.
