Big Ben not only tolls the hours, but it does so with a very distinctive noise. People all over the world recognise the sound before they hear the radio announcer say"This is London", or "This is the BBC World Service".

Big Ben is the name of the clock mechanism... I have no idea why you would think it would be good or otherwise. It is a national monument now, and a vocal point in London, and it tells the time !
