Lithium is often used to treat Bipolar depression as it lowers the levels of noradrenaline, anti depressants such as SSRI's: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or NARI's: Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors, can be used to treat Unipolar/Manic depression as they raise the levels of Noradrenaline and Serotonin.

Lamictal is a very good medication for Bipolar disorder. But if the person has bipolar 2, which is the kind when they have more depression than the manic side of bipolar disorder, it is good to combine it with an anti-depressant. There is Lithium, Depikote ( but be aware it makes you crave carbs and you will usually gain weight), and Topimax has been used to help bipolar disorder but is usually combined with something else. There are many other bipolar meds out there, just make sure a psychiatrist is prescribing it rather than a family physician. Usually you have to try out a couple different meds to find the right one for you, everybody's different.
