The 'blues' came about as the result of tough living conditions and hard times. Experiences that were then set to music. The actual time frame seems to vary depending on the source. It may have started in the mid to late 1700's give or take 100 years. It was the blues that essentially influenced other styles of music but had it's beginnings deeply rooted in Gospel Music.

I'm sure there were other influences, however the main one is said to be the slave songs of African Americans while in the fields. These were sung in a style that later became 12 bar blues.

Added: The African American slaves sung Blues Music whilst working as slaves in the fields etc. They put their feelings of depression and sadness into song and sung of it. It is almost like their diary put into song. Hope this helps.
