The moon's orbit must cross the plane of the ecliptic.

For a solar eclipse to happen, the moon has to get in between the earth and the sun and we will not see the sun. Remember, even though the moon is blocking the sun, do not look at it without special glasses. Not just sunglasses, but special glasses that I don't know are called.

For a solar eclipse:

The Moon needs to be exactly between the Sun and the Earth, and the observer has to be in the shadow's path.

For a lunar eclipse:

The Earth needs to be exactly between the Sun and the Moon, and the observer has to be on the night side of the Earth.
