I've had a similar situation with an injured skunk. First and foremost, remove pets, and children or anything else that is in danger of being bitten. Next call your local animal control department and explain the situation. If you can close off the porch so it won't get away do that. If he is rabid you don't want him wandering out into the world again. Then wait for the animal control officer. Bats have a very high incident of being rabid and animal control will most likely destroy the bat and test it for rabies. Warning: Do not try to attend to the bat yourself. It does not have to be foaming at the mouth or acting deranged to be infected, my skunk had no signs of illness at all.

∙ 13y agoFinding a bat in the room of a child too young to speak is an indication for prophylaxis, treat the child(ren) against rabies, as bats often carry it. Kill the bat and turn it in to a veterinarian for testing.
If the child can speak, ask him if the bat bit him, and respond accordingly.
If the bat is in a house with no small children, wait for it to land. Trap it while wearing heavy gloves, and return it to the outdoors. An exterminator can find where the bats are getting in and plug the hole.

Usually, if they find a source of food they will come back to check on it again. Best thing is remove the source of food or kill the possum next time it returns.
