National parks are diverse, spanning historic, cultural, and natural areas of national significance. People come to national parks to learn, to recreate, to get outdoors, or to make a pilgrimage. Ultimately what they are for is up to the people who visit them.

You can find out about all the US national parks on www.nps.gov. As of this post, there are 394 sites in the US and its territories.
At the moment there are 59 national Parks in the US. Together they cover an area of 210.000 square kilometers. The US Goverment disband 7 national parks since 1875, but most of them are integrated in new national parks or national monuments.
Alaska and California have the most, each with eight, followed by Utah with five and Colorado with four.
