Some of the names of groups are: Chowanoke, Roanoke, Pamlico, Machapunga, Coree, Cape Fear Indians, Meherrin, Waccamaw, Woccon, Tuscarora, Croatan, Hatteras, Moratok, Secotan, Pee Dee and the Weapemeoc. The Lumbee are thought to descend from several groups of coastal Native people as well as others. Europeans were amazed at the ethnic and linguistic diversity that they found on the North coast.

The names and locations were different at different times. As more and more colonists arrived people moved or were forced into other places. Names changed and peoples sometimes merged. Also as these were not modern nation states how you count one people as a "tribe" is difficult.
