What nativists wanted to?
Nativists wanted to severely restrict Chinese immigration. They felt the Chinese immigrants would take all the jobs because they were willing to work for lower wages.
The United States was in war with Germany in 1917. During these times Nativists (American born extremists who were against immigrants) wanted to get rid of all German culture. Beethoven and Bach were two German composers that influenced the United States, and Nativists hated that so they banned their music from the United States.
Nativists -- representing a political philosophy based upon a preference for Americans who were born in the U.S. over those who are first generation immigrants -- first emerged as a named political movement in the Northeastern states in the mid-1800s. The nativists at that time specifically opposed the dominant immigrant group at that time: the Irish Catholics.
Like most countries, the United States alternated between welcoming newcomers and wishing they would stay away. Some American nativists, especially in the early to mid-1800s, wanted only those who were descendants of the original colonists to live in the US. They questioned whether immigrants with no ties to America would be loyal to this country, and they feared that immigrants would secretly remain loyal to the old country. Other nativists disliked people from the "wrong"…
Because there was amazing amount of immigration during the 1800's, many people ( including nativists ) experienced lower wages and had difficulty find jobs and homes. Nativists were already against people who are "different" and the consequences that followed because of the increased immigration made them hate immigrants more. Hope this helped!:D:)!
