Just some examples.
1. An "old weapon" RETURNED to jet fighters...GUNS. When first deployed to Vietnam, US jets were primarily armed or designed for "missiles" (examples: F-104 Starfighter, F102 Delta Dagger, and the F-4 Phantom II). 2. The A-7 Corsair II, the only single seat & single engine jet fighter bomber designed, built, and deployed directly into the Vietnam War. 3. The M551 Sheridan tank (officially designated the Armored Airborne Reconnaissance Assault Vehicle); armed with a 152mm gun (6" gun), four crewmen, 17 tons, standard coax (7.62mm) & .50 cal mg, could swim across rivers, air drop capable. The only US tank designed, built, and deployed directly into the Vietnam War in January 1969, later that year it was fielded in Europe and the US continent. The Sheridan was constructed of all aluminum minus the turret & main gun which were built of steel. Approximately 1600 tanks were built, about 200 were destroyed in Vietnam in over two years of combat. Reason? Because they usually blew up and burned upon striking a mine or taking a hit from an RPG. Reason? Because being aluminum instead of steel they burned easily, were penetrated by projectiles easily, and they fired CASELESS ammunition (152mm High Explosive shells). Caseless ammo although great, are constructed of solidified propellent instead of being protected in metal casings. When those caught fire or began smoking, it was time to abandon tank! 4. AH-1 Cobra-America's FIRST attack helicopter designed from the skids up. 5. PBR-Patrol Boat River, all fiber glass construction using jet water propulsion. 6. PCF-Patrol Craft Fast (Swift Boat) all aluminum 50 foot long, 5 crewmen plus one officer commanding. 7. M-16 Assault Rifle. For the first time in history, every single US fighting man was equipped with a fully automatic weapon. 8. M113 ACAV-Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle. Used effectively as a light tank in Vietnam. Went anywhere, anytime! Still used today, although not with the armor and guns of an ACAV.
1. M16 assault rifle; for the first time in history, every fighting man was armed with a fully automatic rifle. During WWII, for the first time in history, every fighting man was armed with a SEMI-automatic rifle (M1 Garand).
2. UAVs-Firebees were used extensively over the skies of North Vietnam.
3. First war fought by the B52 bomber.
4. 1st war fought by SAC (Strategic Air Command)
Vietnam was fought primarily with all of the cold war weapons invented in the 1950s.
The only "real" new weapons were the M16 assault rifle, the aluminum hulled M551 Sheridan tank, the US Navy's Alpha boats used in their Brown Water Navy riverine forces (ASPB-Assault Support Patrol Boat), and the Sagger and TOW anti-tank missiles, both were used for the first time in the Vietnam War.
Radio controlled type UAVs existed in a primitive state in Korea & WWII.
1. The primary heavy bomber was the B52 Stratofortress.
2. The primary ground support fighter-bomber was the F100 Super Sabre.
3. The primary chopper was the UH-1.
4. The primary rifle was the M16 jungle rifle.
5. The primary US tank was the Patton.
6. The primary US Cavalry tank was the Sheridan.
7. The primary sidearm was the .45
8. The primary riverine craft was the Swift Boat.
9. The primary field piece was the 105mm.
10. The primary attack helicopter was the Cobra.
Helicopter gun ships, the M-16 rifle, "Spooky" and the B-52.
