This changed through the history of The Beatles. In the very early days of the band, John's closest friend was Stu Sutcliffe - the original bass player. After Stu left the band to concentrate on his art career (Sutcliffe died tragically young in 1962), John became very close to Paul - they were drawn together because they'd both lost their mothers.

When the Beatles were breaking up, John fell out with Paul and became closer to George - although throughout their careers, he was close friends with Ringo.

John and Paul did reconcile their differences in the 1970s.

They had different favorites at different times. Early on it was Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Carl Perkins, an especial favorite of George Harrison's, experienced a career resurgence after the Beatles expressed admiration of him in an early interview. Perkins became their guest at Abbey Road, when they covered several of his songs in 1964. Later they mentioned the Searchers (of "Needles And Pins" fame) as another favorite.

John Lennon and George Harrison liked Bob Dylan's work early on. Lennon began wearing a "Bob Cratchit" cap, and using more complex language in his own lyrics, influenced by Dylan. The Beatles met him in 1964; while he and Lennon expressed admiration for one another later, they never became close. Harrison and Dylan made a closer connection, collaborating on songs ("I'd Have You Any Time") and later becoming bandmates in the Traveling Wilburys.

Harry Nilsson's career made a quantum leap, after John Lennon and Paul McCartney named him as both their favorite singer and favorite group, in 1968. (One of Nilsson's trademarks was his multiple harmonies.) Nilsson's office phone at RCA Records began ringing almost nonstop, and "suddenly I became the fab blond Beatle from the USA", as he later told Rolling Stone. When the Beatles invited Nilsson to London, he became fast friends with Lennon and Ringo Starr.

Buddy Holly.

He is actually a huge part of how they got the name "The Beatles".

Paul was so inspired by Buddy Holly. When Buddy Holly died, Paul bought all the rights to his music.

Buddy Holly had a band named Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Paul liked Buddy Holly so much, he decided they should have a name similar.
