In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', Dorothy Gale wore two sets of shoes. One were the dark, laced-up, much used, practical shoes that she wore in Kansas. The second set were the beautiful, comfortable, magical Silver Slippers that she was given for having killed - albeit accidentally - the Wicked Witch of the East. In the beloved 1939 film version, Dorothy wore three sets of shoes. One were the practical walking shoes of the Kansas sequences. Another were the Ruby Slippers that she inherited through the accidental death of the Wicked Witch of the East. And the third were the black bedroom slippers that Frances Ethel Gumm ka Judy Garland [June 10, 1922-June 22, 1969] wore in the scene with the aggressive apple trees.
