As a border state it played a major role, since it was occupied by Union Forces. It was not a major battlefield but was the site of guerrilla activity and raids from the South. In truth it had mixed loyalties and about as many young men served in the Gray as they did in the Blue.

The secession of West Virginia from Virginia led to the moving of the Confederacy front from the Ohio line and the eastern border of Kentucky back to the Appalachian Mountains.

This shifting of the strategic axis greatly improved the Union military situation in the sector, also because through its territory, between the Maryland border and the Ohio River, passed the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which was of primary strategic importance.

So they broke away from Virginia - establishing themselves as a separate state in 1863, fighting for the Union.
