It depends. If you mean how many pieces there are in all, It's the denominator. But if it is how many pieces are left in a whole, it's the numerator.
The bottom number in a fraction (the denominator) Tells you how many pieces A whole is cut up into.
In a fraction, the bottom number tells how many pieces the whole thing was cut up into, and the top number tells how many of the pieces were taken. If you cut up the whole thing into any number of pieces, and then take the same numberof pieces, you have taken the whole thing.
The top number tells how many of the pieces you're taking, after you've cut up the whole thing into the bottom number of pieces.
It is the denominator of a fraction
The Denominator
Any fraction that has a denominator of one is a whole number. Remember the numerator tells you "How many pieces out of" and the denominator tells you the "Total number of pieces per whole". Therefore any number over 1 is the numerator.1/1 = 12/1 = 23/1 = 34/1 = 45/1 = 5 and so on.
The denominator is how many pieces are in a whole, or one, while the numerator is the number of pieces you have of the whole.
The denominator is how many equal pieces that one whole unit is divided into. The numerator tells how many of those equal pieces is measured. So in the fraction 3/5, the unit is divided into 5 parts and you have 3 pieces of the whole.
The numerator tells us how many pieces are being considered.
