More specifically,

All of the edges of the square added together make up the perimeter. Imagine yourself walking all around the edges of a square, the distance you travel is the perimeter..

For a square or rhombus (but no other quadrilateral) the perimeter is equal to four times the length of one edge. So if your square is 2cm long on one edge, the perimeter is 4x2cm = 8cm.
