Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg, Rosetta Stone, and Theophrastus Seuss

-----

I'm not sure all the names are known, but most of his early (pre-college) works were submitted under the name "Peter Pessimist". As he began to contribute more and more to his high school newspaper, he added a second name, "Theo LeSieg", Geisel spelled backward.

In college, in order to get around a ban from contributing to the school newspaper and humor magazine (due to being caught drinking during prohibition), he began submitting his work under various names including "L. Burbank", "Thomas Mott Osborne" (then-warden of Sing Sing prison), "Ted Seuss" and "Seuss". Seuss being his mother's maiden name.

The Dr. wasn't added until later, when he was doing a regular cartoon column for a publication called Judge. He wanted to give his work there a sense of professionalism and he also planned to write a great novel someday and wanted to save his own name for that. So he began submitting under the name "Dr. Theophrastus Seuss". Theophrastus was the name of a stuffed toy dog he was given as a very small child and kept with him always. In fact, at his death, his wife and that toy dog were at his bedside.

He also published one book, Because a Little Bug Went Ka-choo! (1975) under the name "Rosetta Stone".
