When America first became a nation it was mostly a farming country, I would say somewhere around 85 percent of Americans were farmers in the start of our nation. Later in history, such as during the Civil War, only about 55 percent of Americans were farmers.
There were very few Americans in the United State in the 1600's. The population at the beginning of century were just a few scattered colonists from England, France, Spain and Holland along with much larger population of native americans. By 1650 there were about 60,000 Europeans and maybe 900,000 natives. About 80% of the Native Americans did some farming along with fishing and hunting. About 95% of the Europeans had some direct involvement in farming. Even city people kept livestock and chickens, and had small gardens.
By 1690, there were more than 250,000 Europeans and the Native American population had dropped to 750,000, due to lower resistance to alcohol and various plagues common in Europe. By 1700 the percentage of farmers among Native population dropped about 5% due to increase interest in fur trading with the Europeans. It was still almost 95% among European Americans.
