There is less than 1% of the US population that is now serving in all branches of the Military. Realistically there are more people who work for Wal-Mart than there are in the Military.

It is quite possible this statistic has been tracked, however it may not be readily available.

If it helps, consider this: At it's height only about one percent of the US population served in active duty. Of those maybe ten to twenty-five percent were combat troops. The vast majority of service members serve in non-combat, support functions: i.e. supply, transportation, maintenance, quartermaster, food service, accounting, ordinance, fire direction, intel., JAG, air traffic control, medical, and a variety of other functions. While some of the service members in these positions may see combat, they are not technically combat arms.
