No one actually owns Antarctica. France would only own bases that it has on the continent. I suggest looking up the Antarctic Treaty, whihc features alot more information than what I can give you.

No country owns any territory on the Antarctic continent.

Many countries make claims of territory on Antarctica, some of which overlap. However, USA has not many any such claim.

Note that the Antarctic Treaty negates any existing territorial land claims and prohibits any additional claims.

Seven states maintain a territorial claim on eight territories in Antarctica. Chile's official claim limits are 53°W and 90°W since 1940.

They overlap with Brithish claims from 1908 (20°W and 80°W)

The Antarctic Treaty of 1961 states that contracting to the treaty:

  • is not a renunciation of any previous territorial claim.
  • does not affect the basis of claims made as a result of activities of the signatory nation within Antarctica.
  • does not affect the rights of a State under customary international law to recognise (or refuse to recognise) any other territorial claim.

What the treaty does affect are new claims:

  • No activities occurring after 1961 can be the basis of a territorial claim.
  • No new claim can be made, except by the United States or the former Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation.
  • No claim can be enlarged.

None. By international treaty no country can claim land in Antarctica.

Another Answer

Chile claims a slice of Antarctica, as do eleven other nation-states. Its claim spans 53°W to 90°W and from the South Pole to 60°S. Their claim overlaps claims by Argentina and by the United Kingdom. It's area totals 1,250,257 square km or 482.727 square miles.

As above, none of this land is 'owned' and its status as claimed is clouded by other claimants.
