The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service considers the barn owl possibly the most beneficial animal to humans due to its favorite food being RODENT, RODENTS and more RODENTS. They are possibly the top consumer of such creatures as pocket gophers (the bane of agriculture, but ironically the reason the soil is so good as gophers move and aerate the soil), as well as rats and mice - also the bane of many. Barn owls have large families and each baby owl eats almost its weight in rodents per night. It is said that an average family of barn owls can consume 3000 or more rodents in a breeding season. They will eat other foods, but rodents are their top choice. Other things they'll eat include the occassional bird, bats and Jeresalem Crickets (aka Potato Bugs). A lot depends on where the barn owl lives - they are a cosmopolitan bird (found on almost every contintent) in many habitats, so they will exploit the easiest resources food-wise.
