The Dred Scott decision held that slaves were property. It further held that an owner was entitled to take his property to any state, be it free or not, and still maintain the status of owner and property. It further held that blacks, , be they slave or free, were not citizens of the United States. The fourteenth amendment overturned Dred Scott by abolishing slavery and designating African Americans as citizens.
