Canada formed to make a country with four Provinces Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia New Brunswick on July 1st 1867. The four provinces listed above are the foundation of Canada and provinces weren't as big as they used to be.
In 1867, there were more than four colonies. Only three of them were reorganized into the new country named Canada. They were Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the pre-Confederation Province of Canada which, upon Confederation, was severed into the provinces of Québec and Ontario. (See sections 3 and 6 of the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act).
Canada became an official country at its confederation in July 1, 1867.

Nova Scotia was one of the original four provinces to join Canada in 1867.
Since they have yet to accept the Canadian Constitution some would say they have not joined, but they were in right from the start, 1867. They along with Ontario were Canada so one could say other provinces joined their Confederation.
