I was a phlebotomist for one year. I practiced a lot, after watching for days on end. I took blood from other phlebotomists first, then finally, patients. you would get trained on the job, if you have a college degree in science, or you can take a course often given by a hospital, since they need you badly.

Anyone who works with needles all day shouldn’t be afraid of a phlebotomy certification exam.

If you have been working as a phlebotomist, you are most of the way to certification already. A little bit of fine tuning on your knowledge base and you’ll earn certification and bragging rights.

There are several organizations that certify phlebotomists and each has different criteria for certification. Most require completion of a phlebotomy course. Completing an accredited phlebotomy program shortens the route to certification for some organizations, though graduates of non-accredited programs can become eligible for certification. Phlebotomy programs are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) requires that candidates have completed a phlebotomy course. A candidate may sit for the exam anytime after completing an accredited phlebotomy program. Candidates who did not attend an accredited program must work in a CLIA (clinical laboratory improvement amendments) regulated laboratory for 1 year before applying for certification.

American Medical Technologists (AMT) requires course work and 6 months of work experience.

The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) requires that candidates complete an accredited phlebotomy program and have up to 1 year of experience.

The National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) wants candidates to complete programs that meet certain curriculum guidelines and to work for 1 year.

Be prepared to submit documentation concerning your education and work experience. Often, a letter from your supervisor or lab director must be included. Each organization will have an application packet that will explain all the necessary components for the certification application.

Preparing for the exam is necessary. Study guides are available from the organization granting the certification or at most online book retailers. Becoming familiar with the format of the questions on the exam will be invaluable.

Once the packet has been reviewed and it has been determined that you meet the qualifications, it is time to schedule the test. Relax and apply the knowledge that you have gained through education and experience. If you do that, you will pass the test and become a certified phlebotomist.

A phlebotomist is someone who is sent by a doctor to draw blood from a patient. They are also trained to take blood for donations and to give drug tests to those applying for certain employers.

To start off in a career in phlebotomy, you must go to either a vocational technical school or a college. This education and training takes about a year before you can get a diploma. Although you may have this diploma, you must take a test before you can become certified. Before you can go to one of these programs, you must have a high school diploma or a GED.

The exam needed to become certified is given by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians. It tests every section of information that a phlebotomy tech needs to know. The circulatory system, anatomy of the body, physiology, and general technique are the most important areas of study on the test. An internship will definitely help you along after your certification. It is most common to go to a clinic or hospital for your internship, but some work directly in a doctor’s office.

Although certification is recommended, there are some states that don’t require it at all. Experts in the field of health care consider it needed to continue down the road to getting a job. This is because many employers still require the certification, even if they are in the states that do not see it as necessary. If you go through all of the training, it is almost unintelligible to not just go for the certification. Those who want to be a supervisor need to have an extended amount of experience and leadership.

After you find a job to apply for and get accepted, you have other things you need to do. They have nothing to do with education, but patience. Many people that get blood drawn or donated may be very nervous. This means that you have to be calm and be able to keep them calm so you can do your job easily. So, just make sure that you have a lot of patience when you are with your patients.
