That varied from country to country and depended on the period within the war. In Britain the rations were not generous but at least one could get what one was entitled to. In Germany, in the later stages of the war, it was often impossible to get what one was entitled to, and in 1944-45 the situation there was grim.

Rationing isn't something you can buy things with.

Rationing is when the government controls how much food, gas, electricity, and water people get, among other resources.

So in the US people would might have received one gallon of milk per week, a few pounds of ice, five gallons of gas, and ten gallons of electricity. These are just examples, not the exact amounts.

Depended on the item, and how many ration stamps FOR THAT ITEM that the person had. Quantities of rationed items varied, but were very limited.

Why did the US have to ration during World War 2?

Rations were necessary world wide during World War II because the prolonged wars and vast amount of troops required much of the food production to survive. Food was not much of a problem in the US. Gasoline was rationed to reduce domestic consumption and make sure that the war machine had what it needed. Part of the reason was to make the public focus on the war effort. Some products as laundry detergent were not rationed even though they were in short supply.
