In most armies, it's Sergeant. Some armies are structured a little different, though. For example, the Canadian Forces has a "Master Corporal" rank which is equivalent to a US Army Sergeant, while the French equivalent is "Corporal-Chef", which comes between Corporal and Sergeant.

In the U.S. Army, the rank below Sergeant is either Corporal or Specialist. Corporals have leadership responsibilities, and specialists have skill responsibilities with fewer leadership tasks.

In the Air Force the rank below sergeant is Senior Airman, and in the Marine Corps it is a Corporal.
In the American Army, a sergeant was the 3rd rank in promotion and wore 3 stripes.

However, "sergeant" can be a generic term for any non-commissioned officer above 3 stripes. Each rank above sergeant has the word "sergeant" in its rank title, such as "Sergeant Major", etc.
