I take this question to mean: what do you call that part of a sentence which receives the action of the verb?

If the sentence is in the active voice, it is the object that receives the action of the verb:

'My mother was stroking her cat' ('her cat' is the object of the verb 'was stroking', and is also the recipient of the action of stroking).

If the sentence is in the passive voice, it is the subject that receives the action of the verb:

'The cat was being stroked by my mother' ('the cat' is the subject of the verb 'was being stroked', and is also the recipient of the action of stroking).

The classes of verbs are not "action and passive".The classes are "action" (doing) verbs and linking verbs (is, seemed, became). The voices of verbs are activevoice and passive voice - in active voice, the subject does the action; in passive voice, the subject receives the action, as the object of the verb.Active : He threw the ball.Passive: The ball was thrown by him.Danced is the past tense of dance, which is an action verb. To use a passive voice, you would have to have an object.Active voice : The performers danced the minuet.Passive Voice: The minuet was danced by the performers.
