This question is a very subjective question. Clearly a Christian would believe Christianity to be the most important religion, whereas a Hindu may disagree. Without doubt the majority of Americans do claim to follow a form of Christianity, either Protestant or Catholic, and much of the basis of the laws were derived from the Judeo-Christian tradition, although today American laws are no longer influenced directly by religion. Courts are secular, but it is expected that they will uphold certain values judged to be universal (Do not murder, do not steal, etc.) While some would claim that these are based on the Ten Commandments, it's worth noting that many of the commandments, for example not to commit adultery, either never were or no longer are recognised in criminal law. Some artifacts do remain, such as shopping days in some areas. Furthermore, the Federal Government cannot make any law regarding the establishment of a state religion. Although the exact interpretation of this remains controversial, it means that America remains a country in which the value of religion will be constantly questioned. Christianity has had the most direct effect on modern America's history. The first pilgrims to land on America were escaping religious persecution. Although they only intended to find a place for their own worship free of persecution and state control, the result has been a nation where religion will continue to be questioned and reevaluated.
