I'm not sure about their beliefs today, but many years ago they believed in many gods, like the sun god, Amon Re. Some people believe they may have built the pyramids to honor Amon Re. They worshipped Osiris, Isis, Hathor, Anubis, Bast, Ptah, Atum, and many others. Each god could do different things.
Egyptians also believed their pharaohs were gods in human form, so I'm guessing that's why they obeyed their every command.
