The Mississippi is the only home that Huck really has. Every time Huck steps on land, he experiences another misconception/lesson. All of his river experiences are positive. So you could say that the Mississippi River is an extended metaphor for Huck's true home.
You also will notice after reading that every time the weather turns bad, Huck has an epiphany shortly after. This is most easily connected with the fog on the river. He plays a trick on Jim, saying he never left Jim for a moment. Jim believes him, but when Huck points out an inconsistency in his story, proving it is false, Huck automatically feels bad. This is the first sign of any empathy towards Jim, and Jim starts to be viewed as a human to Huck, who misses his family "just like white folk," which eventually leads to his climactic epiphany that takes place within Chapter 31.
