A highlight of the consumer movement came in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy presented his Consumer Bill of Rights. He declared that every consumer has the following rights:

1. The Right to be Informed

2. The Right to Safety

3. The Right to Choose

4. The Right to be Heard

In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon added the fifth right to the list; in 1975, President Gerald R. Ford added the sixth; and in 1994, President William Clinton added the seventh.

5. The Right to a Remedy

6. The Right to Consumer Education

7. The Right to Service

sales of goods act 197 9

this act requires traders to sell goods that are as they are described and of satisfactory quality. This directly affects marketing activity because it means that any marketing should describe the product accurately and be able to substantiate any claims.

For example, a Coke producing a 'lighter or healthier option' drink (Coke Zero) could not claim that consuming their product will make you lose weight - it might help, but it will not guarantee you will.

Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008

•This Act entitles all customer to fair treatment and honesty from businesses they deal with. This relatively recent piece of legislation should not have effect most businesses, but was targeted at businesses that do not always treat their customers well.

•Under this Act, business cannot use aggressive sales tactics, or put on dishonest promotions (such as closing-down sales when the business is not actually closing down). E.G. Apple telling the market that they're going to stop producing iPads to encourage everyone to go out buy all their stock
