The first amendment includes the freedom of religion (congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of religion), freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom to petition for a governmental redress of grievances.

It is the first amendment that gives us the separation of church and state--though the actual phrase is not in it. The phrase was derived from a letter by Thomas Jefferson.

This amendment guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, etc. Voting rights were granted to black males in the fifteenth amendment, and to women in the nineteenth amendment.
