The first Indians established themselves at the bank of seven rivers, which they called Sapta-Sindhu (meaning "seven rivers" in Sanskrit). Indus was the largest among all these rivers. Major part of the population resided at the bank of Indus. Later, due to growth in population, the whole of current North India was occupied by them. They were called Aryans (meaning "noble men" in Sanskrit). majority of the population of India are the descendants of the Aryans.

The Dravidians, whom they defeated were chased to the South of the Indian sub-continent and Sri Lanka. The Dravidians are regarded as the first inhabitants of India.
