From the beginning of WW I Australia pledged support for British and allies. The first military action undertaken by Australian forces was against German possessions in German Guinea. Australian forces also went overseas to participate in North African campaigns and Middle Eastern battles like Battle of Gallipoli. Australian and New Zealand forces also fought against Turks in Egypt and Palestine. Australian Flying Corps participated in Middle East and Western Front and Royal Australian Navy participated in operations in Atlantic, North Sea, Adriatic and Black Sea, as well as the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Like the mainland US (discounting Pearl Harbor) Australia was not actually invaded in WWII, but like the US they had men fighting all over the world. Principally, they fought in the Pacific in places like Burma and Singapore, which is why so many of them ended up being brutalized in Japanese prisoner of war camps. But there were also Australians in places like North Africa. At the time, Australia was part of the British Commonwealth, and the British Government was able to call on the services of Australian troops wherever they were needed. Phil

I wrote this answer to change the previous response, which was an all too typical answer that sadly is incorrect.

Australians were very much involved on the western front, in fact it was a much bigger role and had far more casualties than Gallipoli. Approximately 250,000 fought on the western front, while about 50,000 fought in Gallipoli. About 50,000 men died on the western front, while about 8,500 died in Gallipoli.

Australians fought in several major battles, such as the Battle of the Somme and at Pozieres and Ypres. We provided great support to the Allies in finally defeating the Germans on the western fron. However, the Australians were almost considered a part of 'British Forces' rather than the separate Australian forces, which is why they haven't received as much recognition. I suggest you read Jonathan King's book 'The Western Front Diaries'...it's a great read about Australians on the western front.

Australia's role was as backup to Britain in the fight, or expendable forces, because Australia wanted to prove that it was worthy of being a stand-alone country.
