That was why Lincoln was so anxious to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which would make it ethically impossible for free nations abroad to be seen fighting directly for slavery.

America was fortunate in being represented in London by Charles Adams, an exceptionally able diplomat, who managed the war-situation with great skill.
