Paris is the Trojan Prince who decided between Hera, Athene, and Aphrodite and Thetis's wedding with the golden apple. He chose Aphrodite, who told him he would get the love of his life, witch turned out to be Helen from Sparta. It is because of Paris and Helen that the Trojan War was started.
In legend, the events were set in motion by Zeus, the great God of Mount Olympus. He asked Paris to name the most beautiful goddess he knew of. To curry favor with Paris, Aphrodite promised him the most beautiful woman in the world if he would name her. Thus, Paris named Aphrodite (also known as Venus, in the Roman pantheon), but this only angered Zeus's wife, Hera, as well as Athena.
Despite attempts by Hera to prevent Paris from having Helen, Paris sailed from Troy to Mycenae and abducted Helen.
It is believed that this abduction myth was passed down from a more primitive abduction myth, told centuries earlier in Sanskrit - or even a proto Indo-European language prior to Sanskrit.
The judgement of Paris is what started the Trojan War - when the three goddesses offered him bribes for choosing them as the most fair (beautiful), he chose Aphrodite's gift - the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. Paris kidnapped Helen and secreted her away to Troy, infuriating the king (her husband), and causing the Greeks to attack Troy.
Be prepared for a short story....
Once upon a time, there was a wedding in Olympus. Weddings of the gods and goddesses were very important, and if one wasn't invited, it meant that person was not to be considered important. In this particular wedding, almost everyone was invited--except Eris, the goddess of discord (not to be confused with Eros, Aphrodite's son, otherwise known as Cupid)...because really, who wants the goddess of discord at their wedding? Eris was, of course, furious, and decided to ruin the marriage a little bit. Around the time of the reception, she snuck in and tossed a golden apple in the center of the room, labeled "For the Fairest". At a mortal wedding, people would assume that the apple was for the bride. However, this was an immortal wedding, and three goddesses immediately started fighting over the apple--Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena. They eventually turned to Zeus to pick which one of them was the fairest. Zeus, knowing that no matter which woman he picked, the other two would hate him for eternity, brought a poor mortal man named Paris from Troy to decide. Of course, all three women offered him bribes for picking her. Athena said "If you pick me, I shall grant you all the wisdom in the world." Hera said "If you pick me, I shall grant you all the land in the world." And Aphrodite said "If you pick me, I shall grant you the most beautiful woman in the world." Paris, being rather young and foolish, naturally chose Aphrodite. And so he was granted Helen of Sparta--who's father was very upset upon finding that she was missing, and so declared a war on Troy. And that is how the Trojan war supposedly started.
