Nominal at best. Ostensibly a Church of England colony it was early on shaped by granting tolerance to the expelled Puritans of Massachusetts Bay who needed a home. Officially it accepted Trinitarian Protestant Christians of any name and title. An acceptable Religion may have been viewed as less important politically then useful skills as colonists were and eventually it was viewed as a safe haven for dissidents of any faith as long as they did not flaunt their religion or attempt to gain converts.
Today its population consists of about 35% Catholics which was a group that would have been denied admission under colonial rules.
