Villagers traded any surplus. Gold was plentiful in present-day Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal. In return West Africans had salt. People need salt to prevent dehydration and there was a heavy abundance of salt in some places. However in places like the savanna, salt was scarce. Resources in West Africa during the colonial, post-colonial, even modern period determined the overall makeup of transportation infrastructure layout. After these nations became independent they found it difficult to adapt existing infrastructures like a normal country would. This became just another legacy of the colonial period.
