Slavery probably did not play a major role in the War with Mexico. After Mexico lost the Texas War of Independence, she built up a much better trained and more powerful army. When a Mexican Army crossed the Rio Grand River and started the war, the English observers though Mexico would win the war.

At the Battle of Buena Vista outside of Monterrey, the Mexicans probably would have prevailed the next day. Instead, a coup d'etat occurred in Mexico City. Santa Anna withdrew his troops.

The Battle of Vera Cruz was the only real battle that occurred when the Americans landed. They kept performing maneuvers to get between the Mexican army and Mexico City.

Mexico city fell without a fight.

While slavery was not an issue as a cause of the war and was not an issue during the war, it was an issue after the war. The United States had the option of drawing its southern border anywhere it chose. When the commissioner realized that slavery was not feasible south of Texas, he kept the border of Texas where it was. So slavery played a role after the war ended.

Since California and Utah had fought on the side of the United States, he took them into the United States.
