The Royal Road was a strategic road which facilitated the passage of couriers and military. It was used for limited commercial traffic of high priced commodities, but for foodstuffs and other heavy traffic, road transport was too inefficient to be used. Cargo was moved by water - the rivers and sea traffic which could move economic quantities. A wagon moved so slowly it would have its contents eaten en route by its draft animals if it was used to transport foodstuffs.
