The church provided the necessities for spiritual beliefs of the peasants, baptism, confirmation, mass, marriage, unction, a funeral, and so on. It provided a place where entertainments happened, in which people could be morally instructed. The church provided a refuge for those who needed it. The idea of sanctuary was well developed and respected. There are cases of queens, seeking a place to get away from their husbands, moved into monasteries, whose sanctity was respected by the kings. Sanctuary was also provided to peasants who felt a need to get away from whatever cares they had, provided the leaders of the monasteries believed they were in good faith. Aside from these, the church provided the possibility of a life in which a person could advance without being stuck in the hierarchy of the manorial system. The middle ages were not a time in which an ambitious person could attain social mobility. But the church offered a place where a person could dedicate his life to a job, and if he or she did well, there was a possibility of advancement. There were many bishops, and even a few popes, who arose from very humble beginnings, and their success could be reflected back to their families.
