Vespucci did NOT sail with Columbus. The only reason that America is named after him is that a German map maker read Vespucci's account that he landed on North America. Columbus never did.
Note that Amerigo Vespucci did not lead these expeditions, he just came as an observer and made written accounts. The third voyage he took to the Americas was led by Gonçalo Coelho. The ship went to the Cape Verde Islands first, then went west to Brazil. When they reached Brazil, they sailed south along the coast. Upon Amerigo's return, he explained that the landmass was not Asia, but a New World. It was later named using the feminine form of the Latin translation of his name.
