Firstly, the spacecraft missions to Mars are not termed 'satellites'. Most are sent to the surface (rovers or other robots) while other orbiters may orbit the planet for a period of time before moving on to explore elsewhere. An example would be Cassini, although this IS NOT a mars mission, it was actually sent to Saturn. I can't help you on the orbiter front, but an excellent resource for researching the surface missions is Google Mars. Here's the link - http://www.google.com/mars/

The first satellite to observe Mars in a flyby manner was Mariner 4, launched on the 28th of November 1964 and making a rendezvous with Mars on the 5th of December 1964. However the first probes to make a surface landing on mars were two soviet probes called Mars 2 and Mars 3, landing on the 27th of November 1971 and the 2nd of December 1971 respectively. These probes, however, fell out of contact shortly after landing. The first probe to successfully land and send back pictures were NASA's Viking 1 and Viking 2, landing in 1976 with the former remaining operational for six years and the latter for three.

When did the mars rover take its first trip?

The Mars 2, Prop-M rover, was sent in 1971 and was the first Mars Rover to be sent. Unfortunately the attempt was unsuccessful. The first successful Mars rover (and the third successful rover sent into space) was Sojourner. It was launched by NASA on December 4, 1996, and landed July 4, 1997. The most recent, successful, and currently operating Mars rover is the Opportunity (MER-B), Mars Exploration Rover, which landed successfully on January 25, 2004.So far there have been a total of five Mars Rovers.
