His father pulled him out to work in the family business making candles because the large Franklin family needed the money. He educated himself during his spare time. He later received honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, University of St. Andrews (Scotland; Doctor of Laws), and Oxford (for science). It was only after that that he allowed himself to be called 'Dr. Franklin'.
