Summer. North America is located in the northern hemisphere while Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are exactly opposite.
A simple explanation would be using the Sun's position. When it is winter in North America, the Sun is shining at a lower angle, experiencing less sunlight (daytime). As such, the Sun would naturally be shining at a higher angle in Australia, experiencing summer, with longer daytime (more sunlight).
It is summer in Australia when it is winter in the UK. But in winter there it can (in some parts) frosty. I just remember it as we are opposites. When it is dark in the UK it is sunny there in Australia. I just know because my auntie and co. lives there!
Hope This helps! :-)

Australia is in the southern hemisphere, USA is in the northern hemisphere. When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun.

So when the winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere the summer solstice is occurring in the southern hemisphere and sun is directly over the tropic of Capricorn which means anyone on that line the sun will be directly over you.

When it is winter in the US it is summer in Australia. When it is spring in the US it is autumn in Australia. The seasons are always alternating like this between the northern and southern hemispheres. The starting times for the various seasons are the same in both hemispheres: The solstices mark the beginning of winter for one hemisphere and summer in the other; the equinoxes mark the beginning of spring or of autumn, depending on the hemisphere.
