You should analyze the sources of the information (health class, friend who smokes) and do your own research. While the health class is considered a more reliable source than someone who smokes, verifying the information will help you to understand the issue.
Look for information from a variety of sources, but keep in mind that not all sources are reliable. You have to sort out what can and cannot be trusted.
Also, keep in mind what is known about smoking. For one thing, it is known that cigarettes contain a number of additives, some of which are known carcinogens. So, even if your friend is right, cigarette smoking is hazardous for your health just on that point.
