In the Case of a ThunderstormBefore a thunderstorm, you should:

  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • "If thunder roars, go indoors," because no place outside is safe during a thunderstorm. Everyone should stay inside until 30 minutes have passed after the last clap of thunder.

Summary of Lightning Safety Tips for Inside the Home

  • Avoid contact with corded phones, electrical equipment, or cords. If you plan to unplug any electronic equipment, do so well before the storm arrives.
  • Avoid contact with Plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.

The following are guidelines for what you should do if a thunderstorm is likely in your area:

  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may or may not be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could get blown away.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Avoid showering or bathing. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cell phones are safe to use.
  • Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.

Avoid the following:

  • Natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Hilltops, open fields, the beach, or a boat on the water.
  • Isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  • Anything metal-tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, Golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.

If there are no buildings to get in:

  • Get inside a car and close all doors and windows.
  • If there are no cars around, get to lower ground.
  • If there are two hills nearby, stand between them, so the hills are more likely to be zapped than you.
  • If there is absolutely nothing nearby to protect you, crouch low but stay on your two feet and make minimum contact with the ground, so you're still less likely to be zapped.

during a thunderstorm you should get inside away from metal objects and water, if you have a tornado shelter get in it and turn on a battery powered radio to the weather. don't stand in any open, high, electric areas and especially don't go near any trees. just stay home with a good book and a battery powered flashlight. that's what i do.

You should stay inside and make sure your windows and doors are closed. Otherwise high winds could blow through and cause damage. Do not touch electrical equipment or use landline phones. Monitor local radio stations for weather alerts such as flash floods, hail, high winds, or tornadoes.

The main threats from thunderstorms are

  • Tornadoes from large storm cells, especiially in the summer
  • High winds that can damage structures, power lines, and trees
  • Heavy rain that can cause flooding or mudslides
  • Hail that can injure people and pets, and cause damage to cars and windows
  • Lightning that can strike buildings, trees, power lines, telephone lines, and people standing in the open or under trees

If there is a billding near by(depending if you are caught outside) or in side a car. Do not touch meaal if you are in a car. Do not use phones, comuters ect or touch any meadal pipes. Do not stand under a tree.Should your hair begine stand on end, that may mean you are within the area of positive charge(message me about charges and what they have to do with thunderstorms)below the cloud and that a strick is imminent. If this happens, crouch on all 4s at once and keep your hair low. Do not lie full-lengh on the ground, as this will increase your contact with any charge that may be conducted through the ground by wet soil. Remember, lighing DOSE strick the same place twice. For example; the top of the Empire Staete Building was once struck 15 times in just 15 minutes.
