1. Take him/her to nearest vet, emergency animal hospital if necessary.

2. Is the gum sugarless? Does it list Xylitol as an ingredient? (Bring the package if possible so that the vet can determine the concentration).

3. Estimate the number of pieces/sticks consumed.

4. Note any changes in behavior and report them to the vet, also inform them if the pet is asymptomatic (No symptoms).

**It will then be in the hands of the vet. Vet will most likely......induce vomiting, start an IV and insert urinary catheter to monitor intake and output, draw blood sample checking for abnormal glucose, potassium, and liver function (ALT level normal 10-100) results, admit the pet to the monitored care area, check blood glucose levels every 2-4 hours for the next 12-24, if everything remains normal or returns to normal, the pet should be discharged to home when you will be responsible for giving a liver supplement and offer small meals every 4 hours for the next 72 hours. Be sure the pet has plenty of water and offer often. Have repeat blood work completed every 24 hours for the next couple of days.

This was an experience that is not recommended. It is a traumatic time, not only for the owner, but also the pet. This is the exact time line of the how care was provided to a member of the family. In this particular case, the 1 year old 30 lb. Puggle consumed approximately 8 - 10 pieces of Trident Sweet Mint Flavor Sugar free gum, was taken to the vet 4 hours after ingestion and was asymptomatic. Glucose levels remained within normal limits the duration of stay, ALT (liver enzymes) increased to 200 upon admission, decreased to 168 twelve hours later, was 151 eighteen hours later, 88 twenty four hours later. Pet was discharged 18 hours after admission and recovered completely.

Needless to say, lucky.
