BAttery?, starter? ignition switch?
Your ignition also locks your steering and at times you need to move the steering wheel a little and at the same turn your ignition key. Then you should be able to turn the key and start the engine. Hal
change the Ignition Lock lock switch
There should be a lock on the ignition a push button that you push and turn to remove the key
buy a new car or take it to the garage!!
I know for my grand am, I have to leave my key in the ignition for 15 minutes.
The key will not turn due to a faulty ignition (big problem with GM products). It will have to be replaced. However as a temporary fix, tap the key with a rubber mallet or the palm of your hand a few times. You will want to hit it hard but not hard enough to damage the key. The key should turn after you hit it.
The back of the ignition key cylinder is probably broken.
If you put the key in the ignition, while holding the key in, take a hammer and gently tap on the end of the key. Be careful not to hit is sideways (so as not to break the key). After you have hit the key, the key should turn and you will be able to start the car.
On some Grand Ams if the batteries dead you can't turn the ignition off completely. Try taking the shift lever from reversed to park. Then try to turn it off.
Its a safety feature. Put your key in the ignition, push your turn signal lever down, turn the ignition. the car should start..of course remember to turn off your turn signal :-)
Should be the same key. But people change locks sometimes.
I got a friend whose key can't turn the ignition on her 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. She can't get the steering wheel to unlock either.
Put the key in the ignition. Tap it (not too hard) with a rubber mallet or similar object. Turn the key.
The steering wheel may be putting pressure on the key mechanism. When trying to turn the key, also try to turn the steering wheel one way or another.
I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee, and my key fits both the door and the ignition.
Programming a new cut key is easy. Take the original key and insert it into the ignition switch and turn the ignition on. Then, turn it off and remove the original key. You then have 15 seconds to insert the new key and turn the ignition on. Leave it on a few seconds and then turn it off and remove it. That's it. You should be good to go with the new key now. I was.
turn key over turn key over

I usually take the key out, turn it, and put it back in ignition to start
move the steering wheel while attempting to turn ignition key
I am not sure what causes this, but I have had times when my ignition key would not turn. The solution to the main problem is to turn the steering wheel slightly. This usually allows the ignition key to turn.
I have a 1997 grand am and i have power to the starter but when i turn the key over it wont in gauge the starter. all fuses are good. You may have a defective ignition switch.
