If you lost a "placebo" or "reminder" pill, don't worry - there's no need to eat those.

On the other hand, if you lost an active pill, do the following:

  • "Steal" the last active pill from the pack and take it as soon as possible. If you're not taking it on time, use a back up method for the next 3-7 days, depending on how late and the type of pill you're on. (This is fine to do even if you're on a pill with two or three different colors/doses.)
  • Take tomorrow's pill on schedule tomorrow as usual.
  • When you get to the end of your pack, you'll be short a pill, and your "reminder pills" or "period week" (and possibly your withdrawal bleeding) will start a day ealier.
  • Most importantly: Start your new pack a day earlier than you otherwise would have. It's important that you don't have longer than a seven-day span without an active pill. Starting after eight pill-free days will increase your risk of pregnancy.

If you aren't sure how to use the sticker in your pill pack to change the "day of the week" label to match your new start day, call your health care provider or pharmacist.

If you have refills left on your prescription, you can refill your prescription early. If you have insurance, it is likely that you may have to pay out of pocket (the full price) because it is early. If money is an issue, you might consider contacting your doctor to see if she/he has any samples available or go to Planned Parenthood for pills at a discounted price (would need to get your prescription transferred there, though). If you have missed a couple of days, use additional protection for at least a week.

Try to correct it by taking the appropriate pill for that day. This cycle though make sure to use other protection such as condoms against getting pregnant. The pill is only effective if taken correctly...

It depends on which pill you take. In most cases, if you forget to take a pill you need to take it as soon as you remember, but do not take more than two in a day. Check with your doctor to see what you can do.

If you suspect pregnancy has occurred when taking Birth Control, you need to have the pregnancy confirmed by your Doctor. If you indeed are pregnant, you must stop taking birth control as it can harm the unborn child.

If i miss a pill and get back on track does the pill stop working?

If you miss a pill take 2 the next day. One pill doesn't matter that much in a long run. It is when you miss several days that you have a problem. Start taking your pill the same time every day and you are less likely to forget.

If you missed your last active pill but you took it around 24 hours late and you continue to take your off-week pills and then start your next pack as usual next Sunday will you be protected?

You should be. Missing a pill and taking it the next day should be ok. Add to that the fact you are about to start your no-hormone week and you should be fine. The pill packages have detailed instructions on what to do if you miss a pill and how many you can safely miss and whatnot. It is well worth the time to read it so you can be better prepared in the future.
